Image capture guidelines
Measurements are derived from perspective correction, which assumes the photo was taken roughly as described below. Photos taken very differently will still produce a result, but the measurements will not be reliable.
Hold the camera at chest height
Roughly 1.4 m from the ground, kept level — not tilted down.
Stand about 2 m from the defect
The defect should sit in the middle of the frame, not at an edge.
Capture in daylight
Clear, evenly lit conditions. Not at night, in heavy rain, or on flooded road.
Keep the road surface unobstructed
Avoid vehicles, people and shadows across the defect where you can.
One lane in frame
Following the capture rule above guarantees roughly one lane of road in the frame, about 3.05 m edge to edge. That sets the scale for every measurement, so it is fixed for all reports.
- Road width in frame
- 3.05 m
- Scale
- 4.357 mm per pixel
Measurements depend on following these guidelines. A photo taken very differently will still analyse, but the figures will not be reliable.
